A Zendesk alternative with AI built in, not bolted on
Office Elves is a help desk for small teams where the AI agent is part of every plan, tickets come with automatic SLA timers, and the same subscription includes a CRM, a sales pipeline and email campaigns. Flat pricing per workspace, from £19 a month.
The problem with per-agent help desk pricing
Zendesk is the default name in customer support, and it earns that position with a deep, mature product. But its pricing model was designed for support departments: you pay per agent per month, Suite plans are typically listed from around 55 US dollars per agent, and the newer AI capabilities are sold as a separate add-on on top. For a small business where the founder, one colleague and a part-timer all dip into support, per-agent pricing punishes exactly the flexibility small teams rely on.
Office Elves flips the model. A workspace has a flat monthly price with a pool of seats and AI replies, so everyone who occasionally answers a customer can have a login without the bill doubling. And because the AI agent is the heart of the product rather than an upsell, it is on every plan, including the £19 Starter.
How support works in Office Elves
- One line of script, then a working widget. You embed the chat widget on any site with a single script tag tied to your workspace. Visitors get an answer in seconds, day or night.
- AI answers grounded in your knowledge base. You write (or paste) your FAQs, policies and docs into the knowledge base, and the agent, built on Anthropic's Claude, answers only from what you have taught it, in the persona and tone you configure. When it is unsure, or the customer asks for a person, it flags the conversation for a human.
- Everything becomes a tidy ticket. Chats and emails turn into tickets with status, priority, channel and assignee. Conversations the AI resolves on its own are marked as AI-handled, so you can see exactly how much work the elves are taking off your plate in the reports.
- SLA timers by priority. First-response deadlines are set automatically: urgent tickets get 30 minutes, high 2 hours, normal 8 hours, low 24 hours.
- Automations and canned responses. Keyword rules triage new tickets (set priority, add tags, assign a teammate) before anyone reads them, and macros let staff insert canned replies in the inbox.
- Reports with CSV export. See ticket volume, AI resolution and team activity, and export it.
The part Zendesk does not include: CRM and sales
With Zendesk, the help desk knows your customers but your sales tools live somewhere else (Zendesk sells its sales product separately). In Office Elves, the contact record that support writes to is the same record the sales pipeline and email campaigns use. A happy support conversation can become a tagged contact, a deal on the board, and a recipient of your next campaign, without exporting anything anywhere. For a small team, that is the difference between one system and three.
Where Zendesk is still the right choice
If you run a proper support operation with phone lines, social channel coverage, complex routing rules, strict enterprise compliance needs, or dozens of integrations from a marketplace, Zendesk remains the safer pick. Office Elves does not do telephony, and its integration surface is a REST API (on the Scale plan) rather than an app marketplace. We would rather say that here than have you discover it later.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Office Elves cost compared to Zendesk?
Office Elves is priced per workspace: £19 per month for Starter (2 seats, 500 AI replies), £49 for Growth (6 seats, 3,000 AI replies), £149 for Scale and £799 for Enterprise. Zendesk prices per agent, with Suite plans typically listed from around 55 US dollars per agent per month, and its Advanced AI capabilities sold as a separate paid add-on. A five-agent team on Zendesk Suite generally costs several times an Office Elves Growth plan, before AI add-ons.
Does Office Elves include AI, or is it an add-on?
AI is included on every plan, including the cheapest. Each workspace gets an LLM-powered chat agent built on Anthropic's Claude. It answers visitors from the knowledge base you write, in a tone you pick (warm, professional or playful), and escalates to a human automatically when it is unsure or the visitor asks. Plans differ only in how many AI replies you get per month, from 500 on Starter to 100,000 on Enterprise.
How do I migrate from Zendesk to Office Elves?
There is no automated Zendesk importer yet, so migration is manual but small: export your customer list from Zendesk as CSV and re-add contacts (by hand, or via the REST API on the Scale plan), rewrite your top help articles into the Office Elves knowledge base so the AI agent can answer from them, and swap the Zendesk widget snippet on your site for the one-line Office Elves widget script. Open tickets are best closed out in Zendesk rather than moved.
What does Zendesk do better than Office Elves?
Zendesk is a mature, market-leading help desk. It offers voice and telephony support, deeper omnichannel coverage including social channels, a large marketplace of integrations, and enterprise-grade workflow, reporting and compliance features. Large support teams with complex routing needs will find capabilities in Zendesk that Office Elves does not have.
What does Office Elves do better than Zendesk for a small team?
Three things: AI is included rather than a paid add-on, pricing is flat per workspace rather than per agent, and the same product includes a contacts CRM, a sales pipeline and email campaigns, so support, sales and marketing share one customer record and one bill. Setup is one script tag and an afternoon of writing your knowledge base.
Does Office Elves have SLA tracking?
Yes. Every ticket gets a first-response SLA deadline set automatically by priority: 30 minutes for urgent, 2 hours for high, 8 hours for normal and 24 hours for low priority tickets. Keyword automations can set that priority (and tags and assignee) the moment a ticket is created, and the inbox shows what is due so nothing quietly slips.
